The Oceanarium

Our days off last week were rainy and cool so Monday we went over to the Oceanarium and learned about the sea life in the north Atlantic, lobster fishing and reproduction.
This old salt has lots of good stories and explained how the lobster traps work. It is illegal to pull your traps on Sunday in order to keep from getting weekend lobster fisherman. Lobstering is the livelihood of many of the people on the coast and weekend lobstermen would affect their bottom line.
This is the lobster birthing room and nursery. Female lobsters carry their eggs under their tail until they hatch. Lobster fishermen that catch a female lobster with eggs bring them to the oceanarium and they put them in this tank until the eggs hatch. The newly hatched eggs are just little specks in the water, they are scooped out and put into the big tanks in the background where they feed and grow until they are large enough to be released into the ocean. They are released by a boat dragging a weighted house along the bottom of the ocean and sending the babies down the hose. The boat continues moving because if they stop, the concentration of small lobsters would be quickly detected and eaten by the fish in the area.
This aquarium full is local sea animals which you are allowed to handle. The starfish.
A sea cucumber.
A horseshoe crab. There are also sea urchins, snails and other sea life in the tank.
